“
Reload” means to top up or add money to your account.
“Money Express” means Money Express Ltd.
“We”, “us”, or “our” means Newcastle Building Society or Money Express Ltd, acting on its behalf.
“You” or “your” means the individual holding the account.
Telephone Customer Services; using the telephone numbers provided calls to our 0845 number will be charged at 8p per minute from a BT landline.
Calls will be charged to the nearest second and may be recorded for quality of service and security purposes. Calls from other networks or from outside the UK may cost more. Please contact your service provider for details.
For information concerning balance, last transactions or account status only. TEXT BALANCE xxxx (where xxxx is the last four digits of your card) to 80800. Each text costs your usual network tariff which will be charged to your mobile phone.
1 ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT
1.1 The Money Express Prepaid MasterCard product is issued by Newcastle Building Society pursuant to licence from MasterCard International Incorporated.
1.2 The Money Express Prepaid MasterCard is an electronic money product. Funds loaded onto your card are e-money, not a deposit. You will not earn any interest on funds loaded onto your card.
1.3 We will charge an account management fee on the first day of each calendar month. Other fees apply, see the Fees section for more details.
2 APPLYING FOR A PREPAID CARD
2.1 To apply for a Prepaid card you must be at least 18 years old.
2.2. You can apply for your Money Express Prepaid MasterCard card on our web site (moneyexpresscard.com) and completing the application form.
2.3 You will be asked, during application to preload funds on to the card, this load will be free of charge and available once the card becomes active.
2.4 If for any reason we cannot verify your identity, then loading, spending on your Blue card and the transfer of funds to the Yellow card may be suspended until your identity is confirmed.
2.5 By completing and sending your registration form you are agreeing to these Terms and Conditions.
2.6 We reserve the right to refuse to issue or activate a card.
2.7 We reserve the right to suspend Prepaid card facilities at any time for good reason.
2.8 We may amend or update these Terms and Conditions from time to time and will make the latest version of our Terms and Conditions available on our website. You must check our website on a regular basis to familiarise yourself with any such changes. By continuing to use the account after such changes have taken effect, you are signifying your acceptance of the new/amended Terms and Conditions. If you do not wish to be bound by the amended/new terms you should cease using your Account immediately.
2.9 The card remains the property of The Newcastle Building Society and is not transferable to anyone else.
3 ADDITIONAL CARDHOLDERS
3.1 The additional cardholder must be at least 18 years old.
3.2 A fee of £9.95 will be deducted from the balance of the account. See the Fees section for further information.
3.3 Personal details of the additional cardholder must be submitted.
3.4 The primary card holder shall at all times remain responsible for the use of additional linked cards and the transfer of funds by mobile phone from the Blue Card to the Yellow Card(s) or for any applicable fees or charges that the additional cardholders may incur.
3.5 The use of a Yellow Prepaid Card by an additional cardholder will be regarded as confirmation to us that that you have communicated these terms and conditions to them and that they have accepted them prior to use.
4. ACTIVATING YOUR PREPAID CARD.
4.1 You must activate your card prior to use. You may activate your card on our web site by following the Login link and choosing Register Card.
5. LOADING AND RELOADING YOUR ACCOUNT.
5.1 You may instruct your employer to load your salary/wages to the card via electronic transfer such as BACS or CHAPS.
5.2 You may load you card at any PayPoint outlet. A fee may apply for this service. A minimum of £20 and a maximum of £250 may be loaded on to your card using this service. Log in to your secure members area and follow the PayPoint link to use this service.
5.3 You may load your card using your own debit card. A fee may apply for this service. A minimum of £20 and a maximum of £250 may be loaded on to your card using this method of loading your card. Log in to your secure members area and click the top up button.
5.4 You may load your card using internet banking. There may be a charge for this service. A minimum of £20 and a maximum of £250 can be loaded on to your card using this method. You will need access to online banking facilities which will need to be arranged with your own bank. When using this method of topping up your card please ensure that your 16 digit card number is used within the reference field otherwise there may be a delay in loading your card. For full instructions and our account details of where to send the cash to please refer to your secure online account.
5.5 You should check our website at www.moneyexpresscard.com for details of other loading channels. Acceptable methods of loading your card may change from time to time.
5.6 The minimum initial load amount is £20 and the maximum is £2500.
5.7 Unless we advise otherwise you may reload your card once a day. Your card balance must not exceed £5000 at any one time.
5.8 Funds on your card will not earn interest.
6. USING YOUR CARD(S)
6.1 It is your responsibility to check the balance of your account prior to use and you must not attempt to use your card to spend or withdraw more money than you have loaded on it. Any attempt to do so may be treated as a criminal act.
6.2 Some ATMs charge a premium for the withdrawal of money: please familiarise yourself with the charges of such ATMs as we will not refund premium ATM charges.
6.3 Your Prepaid card can only be used at retailers where authorisation for transactions is requested electronically and in real-time. Do NOT allow your transactions to be manually processed using a Zip-Zap or click-clack machine.
6.4 Some merchants may not accept your Prepaid Card. Always check before making your purchases. We accept no liability in the event that a merchant refuses to accept your Prepaid card.
6.5 We reserve the right to authorise amounts higher than the value of your transactions to enable us to correctly reconcile all transactions on your account. The amount ultimately charged to your account will reflect the correct settled amounts including fees and charges set out in the Terms and Conditions as amended from time to time.
6.6 You can use your Prepaid Card to withdraw cash using your PIN from cash machines/ATMs. A withdrawal fee will apply. You may also be subject to any applicable fees, surcharges, rules and regulations of the relevant ATM, or other financial institution or association. It is your responsibility to check all additional fees or surcharges prior to proceeding with your transaction.
6.7 The maximum number of cash withdrawals per day is two and the maximum amount you may withdraw via cash machine/ATM is £250 or the maximum set by the ATM owner. You can use your Prepaid card to buy goods and services up to the value of £750 per day and up to 6 purchases are allowed per day, provided that there are sufficient funds loaded on your card to do so.
6.8 The maximum amount you may withdraw in any four day period via a cash machine/ATM is £750. You can use your Prepaid card to buy goods and services up to the value of £1500 in any four-day period and up to 12 purchases are allowed in any four day period, provided that there are sufficient funds loaded on your card to do so.
6.9 If you use your card for a purchase or cash withdrawal in a currency other than Pounds Sterling, the transaction will be converted to Pounds Sterling using the exchange rate set by MasterCard International Incorporated on that day. A foreign exchange fee may apply (see Fees section for information).
7. YOUR RIGHT TO REDEEM
7.1 You may redeem some or all of the electronic money on your Prepaid Card provided you have more than €10 remaining balance. When we do this, we will send a cheque to your last notified address or arrange an electronic transfer to a bank account nominated by you. To enable us to comply with our legal obligations, we may ask you to provide us with certain information before we can process your redemption request.
7.2 To redeem some or all of your electronic money, send us an email using the "contact us" facility on the Website.
8. KEEPING YOUR PIN SAFE
8.1 Using your card and PIN will be the primary method of taking money from your card.
8.2 You must keep your PIN safe at all times. This means that when you receive your PIN you must memorise it and destroy the notification slip. Please ensure that:
a) Your PIN is kept safe and is not disclosed to anyone else.
b) Your family or friends PIN is kept safe and is not disclosed to anyone else.
c) You do not disclose your PIN to retailers.
You must not write down your PIN.
8.3 You must not use your PIN if anyone can see you typing it in. If you suspect that someone else knows your PIN, change it as soon as possible.
8.4 If you have forgotten your PIN you must call Customer Services who will cancel your existing PIN and issue a new one within 5 working days.
8.5 If you find your current PIN difficult to remember you may change it at most ATM’s, by selecting ‘PIN service’ option.
9. REPORTING LOST AND STOLEN CARDS
9.1 You must call us immediately on (UK) 0845 602 2629 (International) ++44 (0) 871 315 8299 24 hours a day 7 days a week if any of the following occur;
- Your card is lost
- Your card has been stolen
- You find out your Prepaid Card is being used in a manner not authorised by you.
9.2 You will be asked to provide your Prepaid card number and other details to help our staff confirm that they are talking to the correct person. You may also be required to help us, our agents or the Police if your Prepaid card is lost or stolen or we suspect your Prepaid card is being misused.
9.3 If our records show that there is money on your card we will cancel your Prepaid card and issue a new one to the address on your account within 14 days (see Fee Summary)
9.4 If we are aware of, suspect, or wish to prevent misuse of your Prepaid card we may without notice:
- Refuse to approve a transaction.
- Cancel or suspend your right or any additional cardholder's right to use the Prepaid card for all or any purposes.
- Refuse to replace any Prepaid Card.
9.5 The Terms and Conditions will continue even if we do any of these things and we will not be responsible or incur liability for any loss or damage that you or any additional cardholder may suffer as a result.
10. REPORING TRANSACTION DISPUTES
10.1 If you believe that any transaction(s) on your Prepaid Card are incorrectly posted to your Account, you must notify us immediately by telephoning Customer Services setting out full details of the transaction(s) disputed and the reasons for disputing the transaction(s) before we investigate further. We will attempt to assist you (subject to 10.2 below) with any qualifying dispute under regulations. We will not be able to assist you if the transaction(s) are more than 30 days old.
10.2 It is your responsibility to resolve a transaction dispute with the merchant before contacting Customer Services and to satisfy Customer Services that you have made all efforts to do so and to provide such evidence to us as we may request.
10.3 We will not refund any sums to you unless you have taken the precautions as set out in these Terms and Conditions in particular keeping your PIN and Prepaid Card safe.
10.4 You will not receive a refund until our investigation is complete.
10.5. If a disputed transaction is refunded to your card it may later be deducted from your card if we receive information that proves that the transaction was genuine and correct. If our investigation discovers that the disputed transaction was genuine and originated by you directly or indirectly we may charge you an investigation fee of up to £20.
11. ADVISING CHANGES OF NAME, ADDRESS OR CONTACT DETAILS
11.1 It is your responsibility to notify us within 14 days of any changes to you or any additional cardholder's details such as e-mail address or contact telephone number so that our records are accurate, complete and up to date. You will be liable for any loss or fraud that directly results from any failure to advise us of a change to your details, or the details of any authorised card user.
11.2 You can notify Customer Services by telephone but you must also confirm any such change in writing to Customer Services at: Money Express Card, PO Box 582, York, YO26 0DD.
12. ACCOUNT CLOSURE AND YOUR RIGHT TO CANCEL
12.1 You have the right to withdraw from this agreement without cause and without penalty for a period of 14 days from the date you receive these Terms and Conditions or the account opening date whichever is the later. Please note this will not entitle you to a refund of any transactions you have made or charges made including in respect of foreign currency transactions.
To close your account at any time you need to write to Customer Services at Money Express Card, PO Box 582, York, YO26 0DD and return the card cut in half. After the 14 day period you are liable for all transactions and fees on your account until we receive your written notice and Prepaid card including additional Yellow Prepaid cards. Once all transaction fees have been deducted any balance on your account will be returned to you. A fee will apply (see Summary Box for full details of charges).
12.2 If your card has had no transactions for a period of 6 months or more and there is only the minimum balance of £10 or less on the account, we reserve the right to close the account. Before we close the account we will try to contact you to advise that we are doing this.
12.3 All refunds will normally be sent to you by cheque within 10 days working days of us being satisfied that a refund is due to you.
12.4 We reserve the right to terminate this agreement immediately if you do not load your Prepaid Card within 30 days of your Account Opening Date or we suspect that you or any additional cardholder have given false information or are involved in criminal or terrorist activities.
13. PROTECTING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.
13.1. We are the data controller of personal data, relating to you, given to us in connection with your card.
13.2 We will process personal data in order to open, administer and run your account and to deal with any enquiries you may have about it.
13.3 If we suspect that we have been given false or inaccurate information, we may record our suspicions together with any other relevant information.
13.4 If false and inaccurate information is provided and fraud is identified, details will be passed to fraud prevention agencies to prevent fraud and money laundering. Further details explaining how the information held by fraud prevention agencies may be used can be obtained by contacting Customer Services.
13.5 Money Express is the data controller of personal data that it collects for marketing purposes as set out in 13.8 and 13.9 below.
13.6 Personal data may also be transferred confidentially to other organisations within the Newcastle Building Society and the Money Express Group of companies and associate companies so that we can run your account.
13.7 We will monitor and/or record telephone calls we have with you and additional cardholders to help us to maintain and improve the quality of our service or as required by law.
13.8 We may check all personal information given by you with fraud prevention agencies and other organisations and we may get information about you from recognised agencies to verify your identity. A record of such enquiries may be left on your file.
13.9 With your consent, we may use the information you provide such as your mobile phone number and e-mail address to provide balance updates.
13.10 We will seek your express consent before Money Express or third parties contacts you by e-mail or mobile phone about any offers they believe will interest you.
13.11 Money Express may want to contact you by telephone or mail about other products and services provided by Money Express. If you no longer want to receive information about products or services from Money Express then contact Customer Services. If you have elected to opt in when you registered for service to receive email and SMS marketing, Money Express may share your information with third parties so they can contact you directly by telephone or mail about their products and services.
13.12 You have the right on payment of a fee to receive details of the personal data we hold about you.
14. LIABILITY
14.1 If something which we are not reasonably able to control including but not limited to a defect relating to the Prepaid Card stops, or delays us from doing something we are supposed to do under these Terms and Conditions we will not be responsible for any loss you may suffer.
14.2 If you have acted fraudulently you will be liable for all losses on your card. If you act without reasonable care and this causes losses you will be responsible and liable for them.
14.3 In the event that you or an additional Prepaid card holder do not use your Prepaid card in accordance with these Terms and Conditions or we find that you are using the Prepaid card fraudulently we reserve the right to charge you for any reasonable costs that we incur in taking action to stop you using this Prepaid card and to recover any monies owed as a result of your activities.
14.4 We accept no responsibility for the reliability for the goods or services you purchase with your Prepaid card. We accept no responsibility or liability for a merchant refusing to honour a transaction on your Prepaid card or cancel an authorisation. From time to time your ability to use your Prepaid card may be interrupted. For example when we carry out maintenance. If this happens you may;
- Be unable to use your Prepaid Card to pay for purchases or to withdraw cash from ATM machines.
- Be unable to reload your account or
- Be unable to obtain information about your account and/or details of recent transactions.
In such instances please contact Customer Services if you have any problems using your Prepaid Card.
14.5 The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) is not applicable to this Prepaid card. No other compensation schemes exist to cover losses claimed in connection with this Prepaid card. This means that in the unlikely event that the Newcastle Building Society becomes insolvent your funds may become valueless and unusable and as a result you may lose your money.
15. WHO IS RUNNING MY PREPAID CARD ACCOUNT?
15.1 Your Prepaid Card account is held with and issued by Newcastle Building Society (NBS) which is authorised as a deposit taking institution and e-money issuer by the Financial Services Authority. Newcastle Building Society is registered by the FSA (registration number 156058). NBS subscribes to the Banking Code, copies of the Code are available upon request. Their principal Office is:

15.2 Your Prepaid Card will be operated on their behalf by Money Express Ltd, whose registered office is situated at: Money Express Ltd, 36 Victoria St, Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 2LB
16. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR PREPAID CARD EXPIRES?
16.1 Your Prepaid card is valid for 24 months. At the expiration of this period and if your card is in regular use you will be sent a replacement automatically.
16.2 We reserve the right to decline to issue a replacement Prepaid Card.
16.3 There will be a charge for a replacement yellow receiving card (See Summary Box).
16.4 You will be charged a cancellation fee in the event that you request a refund of the remaining funds on your card once your Prepaid card has expired (see Summary Box).
17. HOW WILL YOU KNOW ABOUT ANY CHANGES TO THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS?
17.1 We may change these Terms and Conditions from time to time including fees and charges. A summary of changes will be posted on our website and we may contact you by email or SMS at least 30 days in advance, except in exceptional circumstances. If you are significantly disadvantaged by any of these changes you may cancel your Prepaid card without being charged the cancellation fee.
18. WHAT LAW APPLIES?
18.1 English law applies to these Terms and Conditions and English courts will deal with any legal proceedings between us.
18.2 Your account is subject to regulatory supervision by the Financial Services Authority.
19. WHAT IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT?
19.1 If you are unhappy with the way your account is being run, you should contact Customer Services so that we can investigate the circumstances as soon as possible. A copy of our complaints procedure is available upon request.

20. FEES AND CHARGES
20.1 All fees and charges relating to the Prepaid Card are detailed in the Summary Box below. These fees and charges form an integral part of these Terms and Conditions.
20.2 By using your Money Express Card you agree to pay all applicable fees that we will charge you for using your account.
